Building Relationship Currency in Business & Life

Think of relationships like a bank account. You must make deposits before making withdrawals. Here is how to build and maintain relationship currency effectively in both your professional and personal life.

1. Be a Giver First

  • In Business: Before expecting referrals, offer support first. Introduce people, share resources, or help someone without expecting an immediate return.

  • In Personal Life: If you want your friends or family to be there for you, show up for them first. Be the person who checks in, remembers important details, and offers help when needed.

2. Show Up Consistently

  • In Business: Attend networking events regularly, engage with others’ content on social media, and ALWAYS follow up.

  • In Personal Life: Call or text just because you are thinking of that person, not just when you need something. Consistency builds trust.

3. Invest Time in Others

  • In Business: Before asking for a favor, take time to understand someone’s needs. What challenges do they face? What resources do you have that they could use? How can you add value to their business?

  • In Personal Life: If you need a favor, like help moving or a job connection, think about the last time you did something thoughtful for that person.

4. Follow Through on Your Word

  • In Business: If you say you will introduce someone, actually do it. If you promise to help, follow through. Reliability builds credibility.

  • In Personal Life: If you commit to plans, show up. If you say you will call, then call. Small acts of dependability strengthen relationships.

5. Leverage Social Capital Wisely

Dr. Ivan Misner calls relationship currency “social capital.” It is the trust and goodwill you accumulate over time. Just like financial capital, it can be spent wisely or wasted.

  • In Business: If you are always asking for favors without offering value, people may start ignoring you. However, if you consistently invest in relationships, people will want to help you when the time comes.

  • In Personal Life: Think about that friend who only reaches out when they need something. Annoying, right? Contrast that with someone who regularly checks in, offers support, and genuinely cares, when they ask for help, you are happy to say yes.

Cashing in on Relationship Currency

Once you have built enough trust, your network becomes a powerful asset. You will start seeing:

  • More Business Referrals: When people trust you, they feel comfortable sending clients your way.

  • Stronger Personal Connections: When you invest in relationships, people are more likely to support you when you need them.

  • A Support System in Both Business & Life: Whether it is career opportunities or personal favors, your relationships will open doors.

The Key

Relationship currency is about playing the long game. The more you deposit, the more you can withdraw when the time is right.

Ask yourself: Are you making enough deposits in your relationship bank account? Start investing today, and you will build a network that pays dividends for years to come.
