Regaining Control: Tips for Taking Charge of Your Life

In the whirlwind of life, it is easy to feel like things are out of control. Unexpected events can come up and the pain of abrupt change can leave us overwhelmed and disoriented. The good news is when we feel out of control we can take back control. The first thing we need to do is understand what we actually control. We can control three things: our thoughts, our actions, and our time.

Controlling our Thoughts:

The first step in regaining control is to recognize how powerful our thoughts really are. Our entire perception of the world, our circumstances, and ourselves plays a large role in determining if we feel control. Negative thoughts can keep us stuck in a never ending loop of getting what we have always got, so it's essential to manage and reshape your mental landscape.

When thinking about a way to control your thoughts, think about what you are allowing yourself to hear. A good place to start is to decrease the negative influences, such as the constant barrage of negativity from social media or the news. Instead choose content that uplifts and inspires positivity.

Control Through Actions:

Our actions are a direct reflection of our control over our lives. Taking charge of our actions empowers us to do the things we know we want to do to get what we want out of life.

Set a new goal or reassess a previous goal. Break that goal down into smaller, more manageable tasks. When we complete each step we can gain more control with the completion of each task. By completing each task we are controlling our actions and the feeling of being out of control begins to dissipate.

A suggestion would be to maintain a daily routine that aligns with your goals and values. Even if the routine consists of only one or two things. Routines do not have to be long or daunting. A well-structured simple routine helps you stay on track and reduces the chaos of uncertainty.

Control through Time:

Our time is one of the most valuable, finite, and squandered resource. Consciously focusing on how we spend our time is crucial to eliminating feeling out of control.

One way to control our time is to create a personal schedule. If there is a schedule already in place and it is not serving us anymore, change it. Customizing the schedule to match the current needs and priorities is the key to regaining control over all parts of our lives.

In a chaotic and unpredictable world, remember we are in control of only three things. Everything else is not up to us. By refocusing our efforts on the things we actually do control, we empower ourselves to live our best life. A life not consumed by negativity or spiraling into a sea of uncertainty.

We all have the power to shape our own future. By focusing on controlling our thoughts, actions, and time we can begin to gain back control of our lives.
