Beware of Time Wasters

Time is our most valuable resource, yet it is often squandered on activities that do little to advance our goals. Whether you are working from home or in a traditional office, it is crucial to identify and avoid time wasters to maintain productivity and achieve success.

Certain habits can drain your time and reduce your efficiency. Here are major time wasters to watch out for:

Constantly Checking Emails and Social Media

This habit can lead to endless scrolling and platform switching, often causing time blindness. Getting lost in the endless requests, videos, and perceived urgency eats away at productive work time.

Tip: Create specific times to check your email and social media feeds. Aim for two to three times a day, dedicating 30 minutes to each session. This approach allows you to stay connected while also minimizing distractions. During these scheduled blocks, you can consolidate activities like responding to emails, browsing social media, and returning phone calls. Be sure to set a timer for each 30 minute session so you can stay on track and move to the next time block on your calendar at the scheduled time.

Consolidating this type of low level activity can greatly assist in keeping you productive during the work day.

Procrastination

Procrastination is another common issue that can affect anyone, regardless of their work environment. It is easy to get caught up in less important tasks or distractions, whether they are household chores, endless emails, personal projects, or simply relaxing.

Tip: Recognize that productive work gets priority, especially income producing activities. Use this time to focus on your core responsibilities, create processes, and plan for the future. Similarly to scheduling time for the low level activity as mentioned above, schedule time for productivity. Ensure there is a block on your calendar for income producing activity.

Pro tip: Execute and finish your productivity block, where you work on your income producing activity, BEFORE your scheduled email or social media time. By dedicating time each day to the really important tasks, you can set a clear path for your personal and professional growth.

Strategies for Avoiding Time Wasters

Set Clear Daily Task Goals:

Establish clear, achievable goals for each day. Use something like a 6 tasks to do a day list. Take the top 6 tasks and begin to execute those tasks one at a time. Finishing the first task before moving on to the second. If you achieve 4 of the 6 tasks, then tasks 5 and 6 become tasks 1 and 2 the following day. Having a plan helps you stay focused and prioritize your tasks effectively.

Time Blocking:

Allocate specific blocks of time for the different activities that actually help you reach your goals and create your ideal future. Time blocking is best used when you block the activities that move you toward your goals instead of blocking time for all the things you have to do. Creating back to back time blocks that get skipped leading to frustration and overwhelm. Adequate time blocking ensures you dedicate sufficient time to important tasks without getting sidetracked by less critical activities.

Limit Multitasking (Task Switching):

Multitasking has often been labeled as a positive trait in the world of work. However, multitasking does not exist. What people are really doing when they “multitask” is called task switching. This is switching from one task to another without being fully finished with the original task. Task switching can severely decrease your productivity. Instead, focus on one task at a time to ensure completion before moving on to the next task.

By managing distractions and prioritizing productive work, you can make significant progress toward your goals and decrease the feelings of being behind all the time. Maintaining productivity in any work environment is essential for achieving success.
